Wooded Island Bird Walk

  • Wooded Island, Jackson Park Meet at the west side of the Columbia Basin Chicago, IL, 60637 United States (map)

Hello everyone,

Our bird families continue to grow. We saw a mama Baltimore Oriole on her nest and Orchard Orioles flying to and from their nest outside the Japanese Garden. A Northern Cardinal was sitting on her nest near the golf driving range and one of our birders spotted a Northern Flicker visiting their nest tree cavity.

Our resident Black-crowned Night Heron was standing guard in the Japanese Garden. A female American Redstart was observed in the middle of the Island, which was a bit of a surprise in late June. It was nice to find some Cedar Waxwings and a Spotted Sandpiper.

The surprise sighting of the day was of a deer who came to drink from the lagoon by the driving range. The drought must be forcing them to find new sources of water.
