Wooded Island Bird Walk

  • Wooded Island, Jackson Park Meet at the west side of the Columbia Basin Chicago, IL, 60637 United States (map)

Hello everyone,

Our raccoons were not in their usual tree cavity today. However, we found one to two young ones in a different tree, so perhaps the family decided to move. In other family news, the Tree Swallows were actively feeding young in the cavity of a tree near the lagoon. A House Wren has created a nest in or next to a Robin’s nest under the pagoda in the Japanese Garden. And, the Robin’s nest in the garden is empty – the kids must have fledged. They grow up so fast!

We were entertained by two Great Crested Flycatchers chasing one another. It’s always nice to see all of our Orioles, Baltimore and Orchard, who were both in residence. Our beautiful Cedar Waxwings made an appearance too.

Even though we had a respectable 48 species, it still felt like a slow birding day, so some folks resorted to trying to identify empty liquor bottles that had been thrown in the lagoon. One brave birder managed to fish one out of the water to discover it was a Bacardi bottle. And yes, the bottle was placed in one of the recycling bins. Let’s hope for more excitement next week.
