The 585 acres of grassland, marsh, scattered evergreens and deciduous trees that comprise this site draw a good selection of species throughout the year.
Besides a mix of migrants during spring and fall, other highlights include hawks and owls in winter and such breeding species as Sedge Wren, Bobolink and Henslow’s Sparrow.
There is a mowed trail along the perimeter of Bartel, which is the preserve south of Flossmoor Road. It starts at the west end of the parking lot and heads west. There is a detour to a berm which gives you a raised vantage. You will pass wetlands and grassland, and lots of birds! Circling the entire preserve is a lengthy project. Walking part of the trail and doubling back will give great looks at grassland birds.
There is more good birding across the street at Bobolink LWR. The only trail there is the short raised boardwalk at the end of the parking lot. The parking lot at Bobolink Family Picnic area is also worth a visit - sometimes there are different birds there, using the trees.
