Situated on the banks of the Calumet River, this site features woods that are excellent for migrating songbirds and a sizable marsh that has hosted nesting Moorhens, Yellowheaded Blackbirds, Marsh Wrens and other wetland birds. In the near future, it will also be home to the City of Chicago’s Ford Calumet Environmental Center.
Hegewisch Marsh is 129 acres of native marsh, wetland, and wet prairie habitats along the Calumet River. The site has over a mile of trails through the scenic park. It is also a premiere site for hemi marsh and wetland birds, as well as other wildlife, such as deer, beavers, and amphibians.
