Last fall, members of an encampment were evicted from the site of a planned Coastal Natural Area along Lakeshore Drive north of Lawrence, which would increase migratory bird habitat. We got some facts about homelesness in Uptown.

Controlled burns and black soil have many benefits to our native ecosystems. These ecosystems evolved with fire, initially caused by lightning, and also set by indigenous people, who burned to increase forage for game. So now our ecosystems are fire dependent, more healthy when they burn regularly.

If you’re interested in birding at all, we encourage you join a Christmas Bird Count. There are many in our region, on different days and in different locations. An interactive map can help you find the one that’s right for you!

Action needed today! Call or email your state rep Illinois about HB5204 which initiates a Lights out during migration provision starting 2024 and creates the Bird Conservation Commission for the purpose of promoting bird conservation and providing education and awareness.
