Overview:
Founded in 1972, Chicago Audubon Society (CAS) is a chapter affiliated with the National Audubon Society that serves Chicago and most of Cook County, other than the northwest and far south. CAS is dedicated to protecting birds and other wildlife and the habitat that supports them. Our vision is that all communities in our region understand, value and protect birds, other wildlife and habitat. CAS connects people with birds and nature through field trips, educational programming, advocacy, stewardship and research. CAS collaborates with other local birding and environmental groups to help achieve common goals.

Contract Summary:
This contractual position will report to the Chair of the Chicago Audubon Society Communications Committee and the President of Chicago Audubon Society. The Cultural Sensitivity Reviewer will be part of the Cultural Sensitivity Committee, composed of other contractors and members of the CAS Communications Committee. They will review selected writings and provide feedback on cultural sensitivity and awareness. They will play a role in the community culture change at CAS towards equity, inclusion, and anti-racism, and make those values clear in CAS messaging. Work will be done via Zoom and Email.
Essential Functions:
· Attend a preliminary meeting with all CSC members to discuss the process and guidelines for certain recurring situations, and occasional program review meetings (not more than quarterly)
· Receive notifications of review opportunities which include type of post, length of post, expected turnaround timelines, and compensation, and respond within 24 hours with availability. Types of posts: Short content - social media, etc; Long content - website page, blog post, etc.
· Review and provide comments with the agreed-upon time frame. This may include a Zoom or phone call to explain nuance.
· Review one round of revisions if necessary.
Qualifications and Experience
Has familiarity with the experiences and concerns of BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities and other marginalized groups and neighborhoods in Chicago
Has a basic understanding of social justice concepts and language
Access and familiarity with email, and the ability to respond to emails within 24 hours
The ability to read, comprehend, and respond to written content and images
· Respect the CAS ethic: problem-solving, collaborative, science-based, welcoming, inclusive, and enthusiastic about learning and teaching about birds and nature.
· Ability to get along with a variety of people
· Candidate must be a self-motivated individual.
Useful but not necessary:
· Prior participation with Chicago Audubon Society or other birding/nature/conservation groups
· Follows local current events and news
· Has some familiarity with birding
Compensation
Short content: $25 per review - social media, etc
Long content: $40 per review - website page, blog post, etc
Additional rounds of review if needed - $15 per round
